What is the difference between health and wellness?

Health and wellness are related concepts, but they have distinct meanings.

According to the World Health Organization, health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Moreso, health refers to the overall state of an individual's body or mind, especially in terms of the presence or absence of illnesses, injuries, or impairments.

Health typically emphasizes the absence of disease or medical conditions. It is often assessed through various indicators such as physical examinations, medical tests, and diagnostic criteria.

Health can be categorized into different dimensions, including physical health (related to the body's functioning), mental health (related to emotional and psychological well-being), and social health (related to interpersonal relationships and community involvement).

Wellness is a more holistic and broader concept that encompasses overall well-being and quality of life. It involves actively pursuing activities, choices, and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health.

Wellness goes beyond the absence of illness and includes elements like balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, stress management, positive mental attitude, and other lifestyle factors that contribute to a person's overall well-being.

Wellness considers multiple dimensions, including physical wellness, emotional wellness, intellectual wellness, social wellness, spiritual wellness, and environmental wellness. It encourages a proactive approach to health by promoting healthy habits and preventive measures.

In summary, health tends to be more focused on the absence of illness or medical conditions, while wellness is a broader concept that encompasses a proactive and holistic approach to overall well-being. Wellness encourages individuals to make positive lifestyle choices that contribute to a balanced and fulfilling life.
